When EuroTra was created in 1990 it was with the intention of developing a close network of industry experts working in the field of transport training. There was a need to exchange ideas and practices which would help to raise training standards for the benefit of drivers and companies across Europe, particularly at a time when cross-border road transport was on the increase. Since then, the Association has grown both its membership and its range of activities.
Over the years some members have used the information gained from our network to lobby their national or regional government department, usually over the interpretation of an EU regulation or the implementation of EU legislation.
Over the years the members have worked together on a number of projects part-funded by the EU Commission. These projects have been focused on topics that our members are faced with on a daily basis and include safe driving standards, defining the qualities required of a professional driver and the retention of drivers working in the transport branch.
We have also worked more recently with the IRU Academy on research regarding the implementation of the regulation 1071/2009 (CPC Manager).
See the results of the research here.
Expert forums are held periodically by different members, and these forums are considered essential for learning about common practices and procedures in an interactive and practical way. Much of what is learnt at these events can be applied to training standards in other parts of Europe.
Over the past five years we have held our annual Safety and Innovation Award which seeks to recognise devices, systems or programmes that have helped to improve the working environment of a professional driver. In recent times this award was given to Royal Mail in the UK for their truck and trailer concept which was, and still is, one of the safest trucks in the world. Last year the award went to a collaboration between Shell Chemicals BV (the Netherlands) and Bertocco Engineering (Italy) for their early roll-over warning device for tankers.
We also work together on internal projects, utilising our own funds to create our own products and services that can be used across all member organisations and beyond.
So the Association is much more than simply networking; it remains focused on improving training standards within the European logistics industry through all of its activities.
